Introduction:
AISI 4130 alloy steel, a medium carbon, low alloy steel, complies with the ASTM A29 standard. Additionally, ASTM 4140
steel, often known as chromoly or chrome moly steel, contains nominal amounts of
0.28-0.33% Carbon, 0.8-1.1% Chromium, and 0.15-0.25% Molybdenum. While similar to 4140 steel,
which has a higher carbon content (0.28-0.33%), 4130 material boasts improved weldability, although
this comes at the expense of through-thickness strength. With appropriate heat treatment, it is easily machined.
Annealing 4130 alloy steel results in excellent ductility. Typically, AISI 4130 steel is supplied as
round bars, usually in a hardened and tempered state.
AISI/SAE 4130 steel grade is a versatile alloy offering good atmospheric corrosion resistance and
reasonable strength at temperatures up to approximately 315º C (600º F). It demonstrates a harmonious blend of strength,
toughness, and fatigue resistance.
Chemical Composition
Forging of 4130 Alloy Steel
ASTM A29 Grade 4130 steel should be expertlyforged at temperatures ranging from 1230 to 950 º C (2250 to 1750 º F).
A lower finishing temperature during forging results in a finer grain size. However, if 4130 alloy
steel is forged at excessively low temperatures, there may be a risk of developing a non-uniform structure
in specific areas of the forged part, necessitating normalization treatment before any further heat treatment.
