Introduction:
AISI 4130 alloy steel, a medium carbon, low alloy steel, conforms to ASTM A29 standards. It's distinguished
as a chromoly or chrome moly steel, featuring a nominal composition of
0.28-0.33% Carbon, 0.8-1.1% Chromium, and 0.15-0.25% Molybdenum. In comparison to 4140 steel,
which has a slightly higher carbon content (0.28-0.33%), the 4130 variant offers enhanced weldability, albeit at
the cost of reduced through-thickness strength. With appropriate heat treatment, AISI 4130 is also easily machinable.
Annealing 4130 alloy steel provides it with excellent ductility. Typically, AISI 4130 steel is available as
round bar, supplied in a hardened and tempered condition.
The AISI/SAE 4130 steel grade stands out for its versatility, offering good atmospheric corrosion resistance and
strength up to approximately 315º C (600º F). It provides an excellent balance of strength,
toughness, and fatigue resistance.

Forging of 4130 Alloy Steel
ASTM A29 Grade 4130 steel should be expertlyforged between 1230 and 950 ºC (2250 and 1750 ºF).
Lower finishing temperatures during forging yield finer grain sizes. However, forging 4130 alloy
steel at too low a temperature can cause non-uniform structural areas, requiring normalizing treatment before further heat treatment.
to ensure uniformity and prepare the material for subsequent heat treatments.
