Properties of HM3 materials
3Cr3Mo3VNB steel code name is HM3, is a hypereutectoid steel, is a middle carbon chromium
series high strength and toughness hot work die steel. The steel is an improved steel with
reference to American AISI standard H10 steel and Russian TOCT standard 3X3M3Φ steel,
similar to HM1 steel. China as early as the 1980s, has been included in the original Ministry
of Aviation standards.

Specification for HM3 quenching and tempering
The quenching temperature is 950~1000ºC, the hardness is 46~50HRC, the grain size is 10~11
grade. The tempering temperature is 500~580ºC, and the hardness is 1~1.5HRC higher than that
of the quenched state. Tempering temperature 450~650ºC, hardness 42~48HRC.
HM3 purposes
1) Roll-forging die for connecting rod. Because of the large size and bad working conditions of the
forging die of connecting rod, the phenomena of die wear, thermal fatigue, collapse and fracture are
very serious. The roll forging die made of HM3 steel can eliminate the above defects and has a
service life of 19,000 pieces.
2) In practical application, the service life of the steel mold can reach more than 4 times that of 5CrNiMo
and 5CrMnMo steels.
3) In the bearing industry, the service life of the extrusion die made of this steel is 4~7 times higher than
that of 3Cr2W8V steel.
4) in the forging die die, the service life of the steel compared with H13 steel can also be greatly improved, generally up to about two times of H13 steel.
5) The service life of seamless steel pipe top made of this steel is twice that of 3Cr2W8V and 3 times that of H13 steel.
6) Suitable for the production of non-titanium metal die casting die, heat resistant stainless steel and high
strength material forging die, etc., the use of good effect.
7) It is especially suitable for the mould with large impact load and high working temperature difference.
8) suitable for heat resistant, stainless high temperature alloy forming mold.
9) For integral hardened plastic molds.
