Product Description

AISI 8620 Carbon Steel Gear Steel
8620 steel is a type of medium-carbon low-alloy steel, suitable for manufacturing components with high strength requirements such as gears, bearings, and mechanical parts. This steel exhibits good hardenability, weldability, machinability, and heat-treatability. The typical heat treatment process includes quenching and tempering, which imparts high hardness and wear resistance to the surface while maintaining good toughness in the core, enabling it to withstand high impact loads.

Chemical Composition:
Carbon (C): 0.18-0.23%
Manganese (Mn): 0.70-0.90%
Silicon (Si): 0.15-0.35%
Phosphorus (P): 0.03% max
Sulfur (S): 0.04% max
Chromium (Cr): 0.40-0.60%
Nickel (Ni): 0.40-0.70%
Molybdenum (Mo): 0.15-0.25%

Properties:
·Tensile Strength: 8620 steel typically has a tensile strength range of 62,000 to 92,000 psi (427 to 634 MPa), depending on the heat treatment and processing.
·Yield Strength: The yield strength ranges from 53,000 to 83,000 psi (365 to 572 MPa).
·Hardness: In its hardened and tempered condition, the hardness of 8620 steel typically ranges from 160 to 235 HB.
·Impact Toughness: It exhibits good impact toughness, making it suitable for applications subjected to shock and impact loading.
·Machinability: 8620 steel has excellent machinability, especially in the annealed or normalized condition. It can be machined using common machining processes such as milling, drilling, turning, and grinding.
·Weldability: This steel grade has good weldability when preheated and welded using appropriate welding techniques.
·Heat Treatment Response: 8620 steel responds well to heat treatment processes such as annealing, normalizing, quenching, and tempering to achieve desired mechanical properties.

Heat Treatment:
·Annealing: Heat to 1525-1625°F (830-885°C), then furnace cool at a rate not exceeding 50°F (28°C) per hour.
·Normalizing: Heat to 1600-1650°F (870-900°C), then air cool.
·Hardening: Austenitize at 1550-1650°F (845-900°C), then quench in oil or water depending on the desired properties.
·Tempering: Temper at 400-700°F (200-370°C) to achieve the desired combination of hardness and toughness.

Applications:
·Gears, shafts, and pinions in automotive and aerospace industries
·Transmission components, including gears and shafts
·Crankshafts and camshafts
·Hydraulic components and piston rods
·Bearing races and other machine components requiring high strength and wear resistance

Machining and Fabrication:
8620 steel can be machined using conventional methods in the annealed or normalized condition.
It can be forged, hot or cold worked, and welded using appropriate techniques.
Machining operations should be performed with proper lubrication to avoid tool wear and achieve smooth surface finishes.
