Introduction:
AISI 4130 alloy steel is a medium carbon, low alloy steel conforming to ASTM A29 standards. ASTM 4140
steel, often referred to as chromoly steel or chrome moly steel, is composed of a nominal mix of
0.28-0.33% Carbon, 0.8-1.1% Chromium, and 0.15-0.25% Molybdenum. Although it resembles 4140 steel,
which contains a higher level of carbon (0.28-0.33%), 4130 material offers improved weldability, albeit with
a slight compromise in through-thickness strength. However, with the correct heat treatment, it is easily machined.
Annealing ASTM 4130 alloy steel enhances its ductility. Typically supplied as a round bar, AISI 4130 steel is
most often delivered in a hardened and tempered state.
AISI/SAE 4130 grade steel is a highly versatile alloy, providing good atmospheric corrosion resistance and
maintaining reasonable strength at temperatures up to approximately 315º C (600º F). Its overall strength,
toughness, and fatigue resistance make it a reliable choice.

Forging of 4130 Alloy Steel
ASTM A29 Grade 4130 steel should be forged between 1230 and 950 º C (2250 and 1750 º F).
The lower the finishing temperature during forging, the finer the resulting grain size. If 4130 alloy
steel is forged at excessively low temperatures, a non-uniform structure may form in certain areas, necessitating
a normalizing treatment before any further heat treatment can be applied.
