Introduction:
AISI 4130 alloy steel is a renowned medium carbon, low alloy steel under the ASTM A29 standard. It
is widely known as chromoly steel or chrome moly steel, containing nominally 0.28-0.33% Carbon,
0.8-1.1% Chromium, and 0.15-0.25% Molybdenum. Similar to 4140 steel, which has a higher carbon
content, AISI 4130 offers superior weldability at the expense of some through-thickness strength. When
subjected to the appropriate heat treatment, this alloy is also highly machinable. Annealing the ASTM
4130 alloy steel enhances its ductility significantly. It is typically available as a round bar in a hardened
and tempered state.
AISI/SAE 4130 steel is an exceptionally versatile alloy, providing good atmospheric corrosion resistance
and maintaining reasonable strength up to approximately 315º C (600º F). It offers an excellent balance
of strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance.
Chemical Composition
Forging of 4130 Alloy Steel
ASTM A29 Grade 4130 steel should be forged between1230 and 950 º C (2250 and 1750 º F).The finer grain size is achieved by lowering the finishing temperature during forging. If the forging
temperature for 4130 alloy steel is too low, there is a risk of forming a non-uniform structure in certain
areas, necessitating a normalizing treatment before any further heat treatment.
