Product Description

AISI 1020 Low Carbon Steel:
1020 steel, also known as AISI 1020 steel, is a low-carbon steel with excellent machinability and weldability. It is commonly used in a variety of applications due to its versatility, affordability, and favorable mechanical properties.

Chemical Composition:
Carbon (C): 0.18% - 0.23%
Manganese (Mn): 0.30% - 0.60%
Phosphorus (P): 0.04% maximum
Sulfur (S): 0.05% maximum

Properties:
Density: 7.87 g/cm³
Melting Point: Approximately 1426°C (2600°F)
Elastic Modulus: 200 GPa (29,000 ksi)
Tensile Strength: 420 MPa (61,000 psi)
Yield Strength: 350 MPa (51,000 psi)
Elongation at Break: 15% - 25%
Hardness (Brinell): 121 HB

Applications:
Machine Parts: Due to its excellent machinability, 1020 steel is widely used for manufacturing machine parts such as gears, shafts, bolts, and fasteners.
Automotive Components: Commonly used in automotive applications for the production of axles, crankshafts, steering components, and brackets.
Construction: Utilized in construction for the fabrication of structural components, frames, and supports where moderate strength and good weldability are required.
General Engineering: Suitable for a wide range of general engineering applications, including tools, fixtures, and machinery components.
Shafts and Bushings: Often employed for making shafts, bushings, and hydraulic fittings due to its favorable combination of strength and ductility.

Processing:
Machinability: 1020 steel exhibits excellent machinability, allowing for easy machining operations such as drilling, turning, milling, and grinding.
Weldability: It can be welded using common welding methods such as gas metal arc welding (GMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW).

Standards:
AISI: 1020 steel is classified under the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) designation system.
ASTM: ASTM A29/A29M covers the standard specification for general requirements for steel bars, carbon, and alloy, hot-wrought.

Quality Assurance:
Produced under strict quality control measures to ensure consistent chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensional accuracy.
Subjected to various testing and inspection procedures during production to meet industry standards and customer specifications.

Heat Treatment:
Typically supplied in the normalized or annealed condition. Heat treatment options include annealing, normalizing, and quenching and tempering to achieve desired mechanical properties.

Surface Treatment:
Can be subjected to surface treatments such as blackening, painting, or plating to enhance corrosion resistance and improve aesthetics.

Environmental Considerations:
1020 steel is recyclable and can contribute to sustainable manufacturing practices, reducing environmental impact.
